Gardner getting new tips in search for stolen art
Dozen of tips have already poured in by phone and e-mail to the Isabella
Stewart Gardner Museum's top sleuth as he embarks on a fresh campaign to
publicize the 18-year-old theft of art treasures from the Boston
institution.
"It's very invigorating - a lot of them have come from parts of the country
we have rarely ever heard from," said Gardner Security Director Anthony A.
Amore. "They will be processed seriously."
Yesterday Amore appeared on a three-minute Fox News segment. That segment
also featured the Herald's new Web site, bostonherald.com/gardnerheist,
devoted to publicizing information about the heist and inviting people to
send tips and comments.
Amore appeared last night on the WGBH current events show "Greater Boston"
and was set for appearances today - the anniversary of the robbery - on
local and national broadcasts, as well as a Canadian show. Amore reiterated
his call for people the world over to apply their brain power, technical
expertise and puzzle-solving skills to a case that has been frustratingly
insoluble for nearly a generation.
He re-emphasized that a reward of $5 million for the return of all the art
in good condition is guaranteed by the museum's trustees. He also said he
could be contacted directly by phone at 617-278-5114 or e-mail at
theft at gardnermuseum.org, and that tipsters would be guaranteed anonymity.
Amore told the Herald he was eager to tap into the power of the World Wide
Web to resolve the crime and was already cheered by the amount of new data
he has gotten, including postings on the Herald site.
"Somewhere out there, someone knows something, someone has a brilliant
idea," said Amore, who oversaw the blitz to federalize security at Logan
International Airport after 9/11. "And in this age of instantaneous
communication and collective effort, we can use that brain power to get this
art back before the public, where it belongs."
