The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum yesterday reminded the public that $5
million awaits anyone who helps with the recovery of the museum's trove of
missing art, stolen 18 years ago Tuesday.
"The museum hopes that the story of the Gardner theft will appeal to the
public's sense of civic pride and that the $5 million reward will encourage
individuals to come forward with any information about the case or the
location of the stolen artworks," the museum said in a statement.
The March 18, 1990, heist remains the largest art theft in U.S. history. The
museum said its trustees voted in November 2007 to renew the $5 million
award offer.
The stolen artwork includes Rembrandt's only known seascape, "Storm on the
Sea of Galilee"; "The Concert," one of only 34 known Vermeers in the world;
a series of drawings by Edgar Degas; works by Rembrandt, Manet and Flinck;
and two objects, a finial from a Napoleonic flag and a Chinese Ku, or
beaker.
Anyone with information about the theft or location of the stolen artworks
can contact Gardner Museum Director of Security Anthony Amore at
617-278-5114 or e-mail him at theft at gardnermuseum.org.
