Security is to be stepped up at the Lithgow Small Arms Museum after the
theft of several rifle components.
The parts were stolen from a display cabinet at the museum.
The attraction houses one of Australia's most comprehensive collections of
machine guns, rifles and pistols.
A curator at the museum, John Wray, says the theft has shocked volunteers
who run the museum.
"It would have to be more than one person because the glass in front of the
cabinets weighs too much for one person to handle, so it would have to be at
least two people and possibly one or two acting as lookouts because the
museum has some guides that show people through," he said.
Mr Wray says extra security cameras will be installed at the museum today,
although he says security at the museum is extremely tight.
"All the weapons are in a very secured area, but these were just scrap parts
and didn't demand the amount of security that the firearms do. Well that's
we thought anyway."
