Police are treating a fire at New Zealand's biggest transport museum as
arson.
The blaze at the Museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland gutted a
wooden railway carriage that was more than 100 years old.
The wooden Addington carriage, built in the 1880s, came to the museum from a
farm in Karaka in the early 1970s. While the site is fully insured, the
museum says the exhibit was irreplaceable.
Staff and volunteers say they are very upset and have no idea why the museum
at Western Springs was targeted on Friday night.
The museum's director, Jeremy Hubbard, says the blaze was confined to a
private area and the museum was able to open on Saturday.
The museum is home to the only Solent Mark IV flying boat in the world and
one of only a handful of World War II Lancaster bombers.
Police say nearby residents heard voices of people urging each other to burn
the place down.
Officers are investigating and a security review has also been launched at
the museum.
