Old library building damaged in fire

MORE than 40 firefighters from across Tyneside were called to a huge fire in
Byker on Friday.

Two crews from Wallsend and one from Tynemouth were among the firefighters
tackling a blaze which tore through the old Byker Library in Commercial Road
at around 11.40am.

The fire serivce received a call that smoke was billowing from the building
which is now the Brinkburn Centre.

Two crews from West Denton, one from Sunderland and another from Gateshead
were also in attendance, including an aerial platform, a command unit and
the urban search and rescue vehicle.

A spokesman for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "Staff were
evacuated from the building before we arrived.

"When we arrived there was a fire in the roof of the building.

"We now have just one appliance on the scene and crews are checking the
stability of the roof."
