POLICE: 300-pound Ridgefield sculpture stolen; reward offered
This granite sculpture was taken from Route 7 in Branchville.
A 300-pound granite sculpture worth $1,200 was reported stolen Sunday
morning, Jan. 7.
Owner Thomas Wood said a friend had allowed him to display several of his
sculptures at a house on the corner of Old Town Road and Route 7, including
"Universal," which depicts Saturn on a pedestal.
The sculpture was there on display on Friday, he said, and Sunday morning it
was gone.
"I don't know why it was stolen," he said. "It's a small piece - it just
snaps together - so two or three trips in the car, and it's gone."
Police Captain Stephen Brown said the sculpture was reported stolen at
approximately 10 on Sunday morning. "It's an open investigation," he said.
Mr. Wood is a stonemason by trade. His sculptures are displayed in various
places in Ridgefield, including the Ancona's parking lot, the Branchville
gallery and a small sculpture in front of 17 Catoonah.
Mr. Wood said "Universal" was clearly marked with a for sale sign, and he is
not sure why someone would take it - whether for resale or as a prank or for
another reason.
He said he would offer a $200 reward to help get it back.
Mr. Wood asked that anyone with any information about the missing sculpture
call him at 733-4705 or the Ridgefield police at 438-6531.
The Ridgefield police department also has an anonymous tip line at 431-2345.
