Thieves strike Aboriginal art galleries
Thieves have stolen over $250,000 worth of Aboriginal art from a series of
Melbourne galleries since December 2005, police have revealed.
Detectives say the latest robbery took place at the Aboriginal Art Galleries
of Australia in Spring Street, Melbourne earlier this month.
Two men smashed a front window of the gallery in the early hours of February
1, and stole two paintings worth $40,000.
It's believed the same thieves were responsible for stealing $120,000 worth
of Aboriginal paintings from the same gallery in February the year before.
Thieves have also stolen 20 unframed paintings from a gallery in Bourke
Street, the Aboriginal Gallery of Dreamings.
The High on Art Aboriginal Gallery in Armadale has been broken into three
times since December 2005, with art worth $100,000 taken.
Police are warning art dealers to be on the lookout for anyone trying to
sell Aboriginal paintings.
