Charges broadened for woman accused in painting thefts

SOUTHBURY -- The Waterbury woman accused of stealing paintings and artifacts from numerous museums, schools and churches in the area, including three from Southbury, is finally facing charges related to the thefts here.

Diane Catalani, 52, of 17 Greystone Ave., was charged on a warrant Wednesday with first-degree larceny in connection with the theft of a painting valued at over $50,000 from the United Church of Christ on Main Street North. She is being held on a $1.2 million bond at the York Correctional Facility in Niantic.

She also will face charges related to the theft of paintings from the South Britain Congregational Church and Church of the Epiphany, police said.
