Emergency drill to disrupt traffic around Parkway
An emergency drill on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway will force the closure
of main traffic arteries around the Art Museum - including Kelly Drive -
from 6:45 to 9:45 p.m. today.
The exercise will test the readiness of the city's medical response during a
mega-event on the Parkway.
The following streets will be closed:
Fairmount Avenue and Kelly Drive (inbound only): Traffic will be detoured
onto Fairmount Avenue, right onto Pennsylvania Avenue to 21st Street, right
onto 21st Street back to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
25th Street and Kelly Drive (inbound): No traffic permitted into Eakins
Oval.
25th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue: Access to the Art Museum and Spring
Garden Street bridge will be through the Spring Garden Street tunnel only.
Spring Garden Street and Pennsylvania Avenue: Spring Garden traffic will use
the tunnel for travel to West Philadelphia.
Eakins Oval at the outbound Kelly Drive entrance: No traffic permitted into
Eakins Oval. This closure will allow outbound Parkway traffic to go north
onto Kelly Drive.
SEPTA bus detours: Routes 38 and 43 will be detoured during the exercise.
Loree Jones, Philadelphia's managing director, said the details of Operation
Parkway Safe could not be revealed, but added that the exercise would assess
the readiness of the city's first responders to work with emergency workers
from outlying areas.
The Fire Department has circulated flyers about the exercise at high-rise
buildings and residences in the immediate area. For information, people may
