DUNNELLON - A small etching or sketch by the famous German artist Kathe Kollwitz was reported stolen from a home in Rainbow Lakes Estates on Monday.

Madeline J. Harris, 82, who reported the theft, told a sheriff's deputy she believes an employee with an appraisal firm was responsible. The owner of the firm told police he did not believe any theft occurred, according to a Sheriff's Office report.

Harris, who used to own an art gallery in New Jersey, said she bought the 4-by-6-inch drawing of a nude old woman in 1970 for $7,000.

She had the artwork hanging on the wall of a bathroom.

"If (the thief) is trying to sell it somewhere, all the galleries should know that it's stolen," Harris said.

The New Encyclopaedia Britannica describes Kollwitz, who lived from 1867 to 1945, as a "German printmaker and sculptor, an eloquent advocate for the victims of social injustice, war, and inhumanity."
