Fire destroys Williamsport public library

WILLIAMSPORT - A fire destroyed the community's public library, state Fire
Marshal Roger Johnson said Monday.

The fire broke out at the Williamsport Public Library and Learning Center
about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, police said.

The initial damage estimate was $5 million, Johnson said.

"We expect the damage estimates to go higher," he said. "Computers, books
and videos were all inside the library."

Investigators were at the scene Monday morning, attempting to determine the
cause of the fire, Johnson said.

Neighbors said the fire appeared to have begun in a corner of the building
and spread quickly until the library was engulfed in flames, WLFI-TV
reported.

No injuries were reported.

The 6,000 square foot library opened in July 2002. Williamsport is along the
Wabash River, about 20 miles southwest of Lafayette.
