Stolen bracelet found in Paris to be exhibited at the History Museum
Dana Milea
The Dacian golden bracelet discovered last Thursday at the Grand Palais Biennale Exhibition in Paris could be included in the heritage of the National History Museum in Bucharest, the only institution in the country that can ensure the security conditions necessary for exhibiting it.
Romanian and French authorities said the object was stolen from the Sarmisegetuza Regia archeological site and is estimated to be worth 1.5 million euros.
According to Virgil Nitulescu, a councilor with the Ministry of Culture, several Romanian specialists will be sent to France to assess the bracelet. "We will send some experts, after which the National Commission for Museums and Collections will decide where to exhibit it," he said, adding that there are not many options in this respect.
According to Ionel Candea, the president of the National Commission for Museums and Collection, at present there is no Dacian golden bracelet exhibited in a Romanian museum.
"These bracelets are very rare because Dacians did not process gold, they stored it. Romanian collections only hold Dacian bracelets made of silver and bronze," he said.
According to the Ministry of Interior, the 24 karat gold bracelet, which weighs over one kilogram, was exhibited for sale at 90,000 euros.
Last week, on the basis of information supplied by the Romanian Police, the French police officers found the bracelet at the Biennale Exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris, with the New York-based firm Ariadna Gallery.
The bracelet will be recovered by Romania through an international commission formed at Romania's request.
The item is the only one of the 15 that were stolen by Romanian thieves from the Sarmisegetuza Regia archeological site. The bracelets are the object of an international hunt but the one discovered at Grand Palais is the only one that has been recovered by the Romanian state.
