The case of the missing mermaid
May 2, 2006
Driving through the streets of Norfolk you've probably seen the city's
public art projects pointing you through the city.
Well, now one of those mermaids has gone missing. Norfolk Police received a
report of the missing mermaid over the weekend.
The mermaid was in front of the Tayloe Associates business downtown on Bute
Street. The 7-foot long mermaid was created especially for the local court
reporting firm.
The piece of art was unveiled last August. She held a stenotype machine in
one hand, and had a gavel in her belly button.
The only thing left now is the mermaid's metal stand. Tayloe employees hope
this is simply a college prank.
The theft is a felony, because of the value. Tayloe Associates paid $3,000
for her.
Police say she disappeared between 5 p.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
