successful models, and from there he placed the continent's art and
ornaments on the world map. Some of the models became instant hits in
western capitals, earning fame and fortune. 

So famous was African Heritage that at one point the World Bank described it
as "the largest most organised wholesale and retail craft organisation in
Africa . . . having turned souvenir trinkets to object with world class
appeal". 

Among the many models discovered by African Heritage is the internationally
renowned Iman, who today has a fashion label in her name and is by far the
most famous of all African models. 

Another was Emma Too who became the East African winner of M-Net's Face of
Africa competition, and worked in France and South Africa.

And when Makena Mwiraria bought African Heritage, she brought in prowess and
determination. She had a fantastic collection of costumes and textiles, some
from Africa's ancient cultures.

It is this priceless mixture that made African heritage a place of art.
Yesterday's fire was awake up call to protect the art - something African
Heritage had started doing. Yesterday's loss made many lovers of African art
cry.
