Woman wants artefacts back (in New Straits Times, 14 June 2006)
SHAH ALAM: An American woman wants the Customs Department to return eight
containers of artefacts which the agency seized last year. Jane Ann Fisher
of California, in a civil suit at the High Court here, is also seeking a
declaration that the artefacts were confiscated unlawfully at Port Klang.
Alternatively, she wants the department or the Malaysian Government to pay
RM158 million in damages, costs and other relief. In the writ, filed by
Karpal Singh & Co on Monday, Fisher named the director-general of Customs
and the Government as defendants.
Lawyer Karpal Singh said the statement of claim would be filed in due
course. Among the items seized in September were ceramic bowls and plates,
vases, chairs and tables, wooden shields, bells, gongs, spears, swords,
various types of cannons and large drums. Fisher's husband, American
treasure hunter Philip Greco, is believed to have brought the items from the
US between June and August 2004, and Fisher planned to export them. It was
revealed that Greco had been staying in the country under the "Malaysia My
Second Home" programme. Police are trying to locate Greco through the
Interpol.
