Art thief's hoard located in Santa Cruz house
Police searching a house in Santa Cruz last month came upon a veritable
treasure trove of Swedish art and artifacts dating from the thirteenth to
the eighteenth centuries, all of them stolen from museums, churches and
private collections in that country.
In addition they seized a number of fur coats in the swoop.
The recovery of the 78 items, eight of which had been snatched from Sweden's
National Museum of Art, was the result of a collaborative effort between the
Tenerife and Swedish police.
The 54-year-old Spanish art thief was arrested in Sweden in November. He had
been sending the stolen artworks by parcel post to his Santa Cruz home.
Following a tip-off from the Swedish authorities, the Tenerife police
mounted an investigation into the holder of a PO box in Santa Cruz with a
heavy traffic in correspondence from Sweden, most particularly large
packages.
Six parcels intercepted on December 13 led to the raid on the Santa Cruz
house and the discovery of the artworks.
