$15,000 sculpture stolen
21feb06
POLICE are appealing for help to find a sculpted plaque stolen from a park
in Tasmania's west.
Police say the bronze artwork, depicting the region's rich mining history,
was taken from Queenstown's Miners Siding park some time over the summer
holiday period.
The work, measuring 180cm by 700cm and worth about $15,000, was officially
unveiled in December, but its theft was not noticed until February 6.
"The plaque was attached to a wooden railing near a jumbo drilling display,
and it appears that the offenders have cut the bolts that were attaching
it," Police Inspector March Beech-Jones said today.
"It is likely that two or more people were involved due to its size."
Insp Beech-Jones said the plaque's absence had annoyed Queenstown residents,
and anyone with information was urged to come forward.
