BULLS GAP - A pair of antique tractors, worth an estimated $11,000, were
stolen from the Bulls Gap Railroad Museum earlier this month and the Hawkins
County Sheriff's Department is looking for eyewitnesses to the crime.
According to a report filed by Sergeant Tony Allen, the theft was reported
December 2 at the former Gilley's Hotel, now owned by the Bulls Gap Railroad
Museum and Community Development Corporation.
The tractors, a blue 1960s Massey Ferguson mid-sized tractor and a red 1940s
small Farm All/Cub tractor were stored behind the former hotel, located in
downtown Bulls Gap.
The report states the tractors were apparently taken "sometime within the
last two days" prior to the discovery of the theft on December 2.
The report also states a truck possibly pulling a trailer may have been used
to remove the tractors.
Detective Eve Jackson said the two tractors may have been taken during
daylight hours.
"We think it is very possible someone in that area may have seen this theft
in progress and just not realized what they were seeing," Jackson said. "If
anyone in the Bulls Gap area saw something around this time, even if they
didn't think it was suspicious then, we would like to hear from them."
The building has been the site of several break-ins and thefts, including a
June 2005 burglary where an estimated $1,250 worth of items including two
antique lamps, an antique adding machine, two boxes of antique salt and
pepper shakers and a box of English made model train cars were reported
missing.
Jackson said anyone with information or who thinks they may have seen
something should contact the sheriff's department at 272-4848.
