CISF personnel roped in

HYDERABAD: The Salar Jung Museum authorities, armed with a Rs. 2-crore grant
from the Centre, has commissioned a team of Central Industrial Security
Force (CISF) officials, appointed by the elite force's Director General, to
come out with amodern fire safety system and electronic security plan for
it.

The team scouring the sprawling museum premises is expected to come out with
its recommendations in 10 days, according to museum director A. Nagendra
Reddy.

The museum was hit by a fire scare recently when an early morning blaze
gutted its 300-seater auditorium but luckily spared all its invaluable
artefacts.

Best technologies

"The team were to have begun their study on November 3, but as fate would
have it, fire broke out a day before that.

The focus now is on getting the best of new technologies that are
available," he said.

Simultaneously, experts from the Electronic Corporation of India Limited
(ECIL) had already carried out a study for the installation of CCTVs in a
big way in the museum while the officials of the fire services were also
being consulted to install modern smoke detectors and other equipment.

"Based on their recommendations, we plan to procure 50 per cent of the
equipment by March and the rest by the next year-end," he said.

The ECIL came out with a rough estimate of Rs. 4 crores for the entire
overhaul of the existing fire alarm system, installation of modern
equipment, including linking all the halls and wings through CCTV network
that can be monitored from a central observation network.

"We plan to approach the Centre for another Rs. 2 crores to put in place the
modern fire fighting systems," he said. With the museum introducing modern
interventions like x-ray machines, solar fencing and wireless communication
network for security personnel over the past couple of years, the effort was
also to synchronise the existing infrastructure with the new.

In addition to this, museum authorities also introduced night vigil for the
staff, besides increasing the frequency of checking the existing fire alarm
system.
