British step seen on looted art
British galleries importing art for display may be required to list the
pieces at least six months in advance, allowing claims to be filed for
looted art.
The move, which came after pressure from the Board of Deputies of British
Jews and the Commission for Looted Art, aims to allow families to identify
works they believe were stolen by the Nazis and prevent their display in the
United Kingdom. The bill was drafted in response to a threat by Russian
curators to withhold sending artwork abroad unless their U.K. counterparts
could guarantee the work would not be impounded under court challenges.
The amendment, which will be added to a bill currently going through
Parliament, is modeled on laws in the United States and France.
