*Judge orders Cosmosphere founder to repay $132,0374*
WICHITA, Kan. A judge orders Kansas Cosmosphere founder Max Ary to pay
more than 132-thousand dollars in restitution for stealing artifacts
from the Hutchinson museum.
But in federal court in Wichita today, the judge also said Ary can
remain out of jail pending his appeals.Ary was sentenced in May to three
years in prison. He was convicted last fall on a dozen counts including
fraud, money laundering and theft of government property.Ary headed the
Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Museum from 1976 to 2002, when he became
executive director of the Oklahoma City Omniplex.Federal prosecutors
accused him of stealing and then selling a variety of items belonging to
NASA or the Cosmosphere, including components of a spacesuit and items
carried into space by astronauts.Ary maintained the items became mixed
into his personal collection by accident.
