A pair of the ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in the "Wizard of Oz" were
stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids Saturday night.
Few details were available on the theft Sunday evening.
Grand Rapids Police Chief Leigh Serfling confirmed the theft of the slippers
to the Herald-Review on Sunday, but declined to comment on any of the
specifics surrounding the case until Monday morning.
According to John Kelsch, executive director of the museum, which is housed
within the Children's Discovery Museum on Highway 169 in Grand Rapids, the
slippers were on 10 week loan for the second consecutive season. They are
owned by Michael Shaw of Los Angeles and were insured for $1 million, he
said. The slippers were scheduled to be picked up from loan to the museum on
Sept. 5.
Grand Rapids Mayor Susan Zeige told the Herald-Review Sunday evening that
she had just been informed of the theft a few hours prior to speaking with
the newspaper, but did not know much about the details of the incident.
According to information obtained from the Judy Garland Museum, the slippers
on loan to the Judy Garland Museum were one of four surviving pairs from
the 1939 classic movie.
