STRASBOURG (AP) -- Le conseil municipal de Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin) a confirmé
lundi définitivement un "accord d'indemnisation" de 2,5 millions d'euros
avec les héritiers d'un Canaletto volé à un industriel juif autrichien
spolié en 1938, lors de l'annexion de l'Autriche par le régime nazi. 
En 1987, la ville de Strasbourg avait acquis "en toute bonne foi" auprès de
deux collectionneurs alsaciens cette oeuvre du peintre vénitien Canaletto,
"Vue de l'église de la Salute depuis l'entrée du Grand Canal", rare peinture
sur cuivre de format 0,45x0,60. L'oeuvre fait partie aujourd'hui de la très
belle collection des peintres italiens, en particulier vénitiens, du musée
des Beaux-Arts. 
Dans cette affaire de restitution de biens juifs spoliés, la Ville tenait à
conserver cette oeuvre. Un accord précédent avait ramené de 3,5 à 2,5
millions d'euros le montant à verser aux héritiers au 31 juillet dernier. 
L'avocat de Los Angeles, conseil des héritiers, a récemment demandé que le
chef-d'oeuvre soit restitué, faute d'être payé. Il y a quelques mois, chez
Christie's à Londres, "la Fête du Centaure" du Canaletto avait été adjugée
17 millions d'euros. Mais en l'espèce, est prise en compte la valeur de
l'oeuvre au jour de la spoliation. Cette opération gèlera pendant deux ans
