Arctic landmark hit by arson

November 13, 2005
IQALUIT, Nunavut -- An Arctic landmark, the igloo-shaped St. Jude's
Cathedral, was extensively damaged by fire over the weekend.
Arson is suspected in the blaze on Saturday that destroyed art works and
other artifacts, authorities told the Anglican Journal
(Anglicanjournal.com).
"There is a lot of heat, smoke and fire damage inside," Iqaluit acting fire
chief Gregory Jewers said. "The structure is still standing. From the
outside, you only see some smoke damage at the front door."
The fire marshal is investigating the possibility of arson, and a dollar
estimate of the damage was not available, Jewers said.
The church is shaped like the iconic Inuit snow house, with a spire atop the
dome.
