Who Stole Dockside's Giant Fish?
PHILADELPHIA (AP) Nov. 11, 2005 - Someone stole a large stainless-steel fish
that was part of a public sculpture - and officials are worried that others
may be targeted.
The missing fish is part of a sculpture that sits outside the Dockside
apartments on the Delaware River waterfront. The piece, called Open Air
Aquarium, is the work of noted Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz and
features 30 silvery fish slipped onto columns.
Because of how big the pieces are, it is unlikely that the theft was a
random act of vandalism, said Susan Davis, director of public art for the
Redevelopment Authority. Perched 12 feet off the ground, each fish weighs
125 to 150 pounds and is 6 to 8 feet long.
"It would take some effort and planning to do this," said Davis, who learned
of the theft Thursday.
The sculpture was installed in May 2003.
