REGINA – Several sculptures were stolen from a Vancouver art gallery last
week – including two works by renowned Saskatchewan sculptor Joe Fafard.

One is a figure of a wolf titled Pite while the other is Monument to
Toulouse – a small figure of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec wearing a bowler hat,
sitting on a pillow and drawing in sketchbook.

It's the first time Fafard has had major works stolen from a gallery.

The value of the art wasn't available.

Fafard said he feels bad for the gallery and hopes people don't get the idea
that stealing art is a profitable business.

The owner of the Douglas Udell Gallery has gone public about the theft and
is sending images of the stolen art to galleries and art organizations
around the country.

Doug Udell is also checking the internet to see if any of the work shows up
for sale online.

He hopes at the very least it will make it harder for the thieves to fence
the goods and will deter others from trying similar heists.

"It's a unique and individual image that is not easily tradeable in the
underworld kind of world," he said.

Udell now has a guard on duty overnight and he's upgrading his electronic
security system.

Most of all, he's hoping for a safe return of the stolen art work.
