Painting worth R2.5 million stolen from SABC property

The painting by the internationally acclaimed Jacob Pierneef has been the
SABC property for almost 25 years has been stolen from the SABC. The
painting is estimated at R2.5 million. Police have launched an investigation
into the theft of the painting today. The SABC is one of the biggest art
collectors in this country.

Shocked SABC staff looked on as they tried to make sense of disappearance of
the treasured painting hanging at the 15th floor of the SABC Radio Park
building. The painting known as the Near the Golden Gate was done in 1955.
It was stolen barely three weeks after it returned from the Johannesburg Art
Gallery.

Koulla Xinisteris, the SABC art curator, says this theft has been seen as
the reminder that art collectors must keep a watchful eye around their art
collection. Christopher David, the acting chief legal adviser, the Interpol
has also been alerted to ensure this Pierneef's work does not leave our
shores.
