 Valuable museum pieces missing

11jul05
VALUABLE Papua New Guinean museum artefacts, including a weapon made from a
human bone, have disappeared during a delivery in Melbourne.

The package of antiques worth $53,000 went missing while a commercial
express parcel delivery service was transporting it from Sunshine to
Footscray last Wednesday.

"It could be stolen, it could be lost, it looks like it's disappeared off
the face of the Earth," Senior Constable Rebecca Duncan said.

"We really want to find them because they are very valuable."

The package of 11 antiques comprised three ornamental basket hooks, three
ceremonial turtleshell spatulas, three lime spatulas, a hair comb and a
human bone dagger.

Papua New Guinean warriors traditionally wore daggers carved from the bones
of slain enemies or deceased, powerful relatives.

Snr Constable Duncan said the pieces were due for display in museums around
Australia.
