Among the many important and beautiful pieces in many museums, there are
scores of objects that come from illegally looted archaeological sites, were
stolen from museums or are regarded as fakes. Yet to the lay visitor, these
facts are utterly hidden. The aim of this tour is to reveal these truths and
present the dual injury that this situation inflicts upon archaeological and
historical research: first, the destruction of the site-specific information
which their now-lost archaeological context would have provided and second,
how, lacking this information, they must remain mute and useless in the
construction of broader historical and cultural frameworks.
Sunday February 6, Metropolitan Museum of Art at 10:30am
