Cathedral celebrates the return of stolen artefacts
FRANK URQUHART

THE congregation of a historic cathedral was yesterday celebrating the
surprise return of a hoard of "priceless" artefacts, given up for lost after
they were stolen seven months ago. The church treasures, one more than 300
years old, were stolen in May during a midnight raid on the 13th-century
Dunkeld Cathedral.

The artefacts have now been returned to the congregation after being found
buried in a nearby field, following a tip-off by a member of the public.

They were left with only one of the stolen relics, an 18th- century pewter
communion plate, which is still missing.

The artefacts include a beadle's bell dating from 1693, four pewter
communion flagons from 1745, two 18th-century pewter plates and a quaich.

Colonel David Arbuthnott, the session clerk, said the only damage was a
slight dent to one of the pewter jugs.

He said: "It is excellent news and everyone in the congregation is
delighted.

We had despaired of ever seeing the artefacts again."
