CAIRO, Aug. 22 (Xinhuanet) -- A British man was detained at the Cairo
airport on suspicion of attempting to smuggle 66 ancient manuscripts, the
official MENA news agency reported Monday.
The X-ray detector at the airport showed strange objects insidethe
baggage of Jim Douglas Rose, a British passenger who was trying to board a
flight to Paris, said MENA.
Experts called to the airport said the manuscripts were dating back to
the Islamic era, including old books on religion, medicine and astrology.
Ross was still detained for questioning and the manuscripts were
confiscated to Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities. The Egyptian law
classifies manuscripts more than 100 years old as antiquities.
Egypt, a country with thousands of years of ancient civilization, has
been beefing up its efforts in recent years to foil smuggling of its
antiquities and retrieve those that were taken out of the country. Enditem
