Thief steels heart, takes art
April 23, 2005 SCULPTURE0423
Authorities are looking for a 300-pound sculpture stolen from a south
Minneapolis parking lot on Thursday afternoon.
The sculpture, "Twisted Steel," was commissioned for the Midtown Greenway in
south Minneapolis and was scheduled for installation next Monday. The
artist, John Poole, began work on the piece in 1997.
Tim Springer, executive director of a grass-roots group called the Midtown
Greenway Coalition, called the theft "extremely disappointing to a lot of
people." Local business and community groups had supported the sculpture,
which cost $12,000, Springer said.
It was taken from the Smith Foundry parking lot at 1855 E. 28th St., not far
from a newly opened section of the greenway. The greenway is a nonstop
bikeway and walking trail on a former railroad line that runs east-west
across Minneapolis about one block north of Lake Street.
Springer urged anyone with information about the theft to contact
Minneapolis police.
