Dutch Librarians Fight Domestic Patriot Act
-- 4/22/2005
As librarians in the United States agitate for a partial rollback of the USA
PATRIOT Act, the Netherlands Public Library Association has begun protesting
proposed legislation make also would make it easier for investigators to
search records from libraries and other institutions. According to Digital
Media Eruope, the bill has already passed the Dutch Parliament's lower house
and is being considered by the upper house. While Dutch libraries collect
user data, they have begun to limit what they keep. Dutch libraries also use
surveillance cameras against theft and have begun to deploy RFID (radio
frequency identification) tags for circulation.
