Cezanne theft evidence found at tip

Police are investigating how documents relating to a court case ended up on
a rubbish tip at Murwillumbah, in northern New South Wales.

The evidence related to the alleged theft of art works said to include a
portrait by French Impressionist Paul Cezanne.

Laurie Moroney of the Tweed Byron police command says the documents were
mailed from Murwillumbah to Lismore eight days ago, but were found at the
town's dump last Friday.

"The brief of evidence [consists of] statements from witnesses and other
documents that police would rely on in relation to a criminal brief of
evidence," he said.

"Police are interested in how the documents got to be on the tip, so we'll
be tracing those documents from the time it left police hands on the
Monday."
